Old Mans' Cave - Hocking Hills Park

Old Man's Cave is one of the six major areas of Hocking Hills State Park - Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Rock House, Conkle's Hollow, Cedar Falls and Cantwell Cliffs. Each of the park areas offers a unique experience for those who walk its paths. From hemlock-lined trails, to huge rock formation, waterfalls to rock bridges, guests to the park are sure to treasure their explorations for years to come.  Rich in forested areas and natural wonders, there are over 25 miles of hiking trails in the Hocking Hills State Park system.

 The Look: Cliffs and waterfalls and towering hemlocks line the trail. Huge rockOld Man's Cave Map formations are never more than a stone's throw away and awesome bridges will take your breath away. Make sure you stay on the trail. Years of illegal off-trail hiking has nearly destroyed the flora and fauna once present in the recess cave.As always, cliff areas are not safe for pets and children!

Interesting things to look for: Old Man's Cave was aptly named for an early settler,  Richard Rowe, who set up living quarters in one of the many recess caves in the area after the Civil War. Killed by an accidental blast of his own gun, it is said local native Indians buried him somewhere near the entrance of the Cave. Take a guess where he is allegedly buried in one of the recess caves of the park.

Sphinx Head-at the far end of the trail, a rock formation taking the form of a sphinx head.

Length: Old Man's Cave is approximately 1 mile long and takes about an hour to hike.

 

Hocking Hills State Park Access

 

 

 

 

 

Old Man's Cave has access to visitor center for wheelchairs.

There is no swimming allowed in the waterfalls or creeks. All hikers must remain on the designated trails. Hikers cannot walk randomly in the woods, jump on rocks or hang on cliff edges.

Pets must always be on a leash not more than 6 feet in length and directly under owner's supervision. In other words, you must be holding the dog with the leash. Please bring baggies to clean up your dog's feces. There are few or no trash cans in the park. There are cliff areas in all the parks, please use caution if you must take your pet or children. 

 

Directions: From Logan, Ohio: Take 664 South 12 miles to park. Old Man's Cave is located just off State Route 664 across from the tiered parking lot at Hocking Hills State Park. Within a stones throw is the Naturalist Log Cabin and the newly renovated Hocking Hills State Park Visitor Center.
